Professor Prasanta Bhowmik, of the department of plant, soil, and insect sciences, was recently selected to be a Fulbright Fellow in the spring of 2007.

Bhowmik will use the Fulbright award to travel to Bangladesh to teach graduate level courses on weed management and ecology, his specialty.

''The main objective is to increase mutual understanding between the US and Bangladesh'' said Bhowmik in an interview last week.

Bhowmik's work has important applications for topics that students may not have access to because their books are old and outdated. Bhowmik also plans to donate new textbooks to the university libraries and teach courses open to the public.

The Fulbright program is a part of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the US Department of State, which sends hundreds of US professionals and academics to 150 countries that currently participate in the program.
