Food Science
Study how to improve the quality, health, and safety of foods chemically, microbiologically, and physically. From the time of harvest, the biological tissues of food are constantly undergoing changes which ultimately result in deterioration. Learn how to understand these changes and develop methods and formulations to enhance the health effects, nutrition, safety, and quality of foods.
This major is also available as a minor.
Concentrations
- Culinary Science
- Combines Culinary Arts and Food Science and provides students with a science-oriented frame work that enables them to obtain a B.S. in Food Science from the University of Massachusetts in 3 years. Open to students who have a two year degree in Culinary Science or the equivalent.
- Food Safety
- Prepares students to work in the food industry who are also interested in the safety of food. Students can choose program electives with coursework from the Departments of Animal Science, Resource Economics, and Public Health and the Environmental Science Program.
- Food Science and Technology
- Prepares students who wish to pursue industrial careers in research or technology development or who wish to enter graduate school. This option has a heavy concentration in the sciences and is accredited by the Institute of Food Technologists.
- Food, Health and Wellness
- Prepares students for work in the food industry who are also interested in health and wellness. Students can choose program electives with coursework from the Departments of Nutrition, Public Health and Exercise Science and the Environmental Science Program.
