Lotta M. Crabtree
Graduate Fellowships in Agriculture

Selection Guidelines:

Lotta M Crabtree Graduate Fellowships will be awarded only to superior students who have been accepted for, or enrolled in, full-time graduate study at the University of Massachusetts as degree candidates in one of the Departments of the College of Natural Resources and the Environment. Fellowship applicants from these fields will be reviewed by a committee appointed by the Associate Dean of The College of Natural Resources and the Environment. This Committee will nominate Fellows, based on academic qualifications and demonstrated scholarly excellence, for final approval by the Trustees.

There will be two Fellowships for M.S. Candidates and two for Ph.D. candidates. A fellow who maintains a record of scholastic excellence and continues to make satisfactory progress toward a degree may expect the Fellowship to be renewed for the following academic year. However, the normal maximum tenure for a fellow will be two academic years for a M.S. candidate and three academic years for a Ph.D. candidate. The University will waive all tuition and curriculum fees to Lotta M. Crabtree Fellows. Fellows will not be required to render services to their department or University, however, they may, at the discretion of their department, be awarded teaching or research assistantships requiring a maximum of ten hours employment per week during the academic year. Fellows may receive additional assistantship, fellowship or scholarship funds for the summer months.

At the end of each year the committee appointed by the Associate Dean will report to the trustees on the status and progress of each Fellow and when appropriate will make recommendations to the Trustees concerning the renewal of the Fellowship the following year. Each Fellow is required to turn in a progress report at the end of each academic year. On specific occasions, the Trustees may request a meeting to meet the holders of the Fellowships and learn about their graduate work. Each Fellow completing their program shall provide one bound copy of their thesis/dissertation for the Trustees

As Fellowships become available, the Associate Dean will call for applications. The deadline will be May 27 for Fellowships this year.

For Each applicant the department should provide the following information:

  • Name of Nominee
  • Department
  • Year starting program
  • Projected completion date
  • Degrees received
