Goals and Objectives for NRE
The central objective for the campus-wide committee on Community, Diversity, and Social Justice is to build a community where all contributors (students, faculty, staff, and administrators) are acknowledged and valued, as they collectively demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, and fairness, and work hard to realize that unified and responsible community that can march forward with success and pride. As one unit of the campus-wide Academic Affairs Team, the NRE CDSJ Team defines the college’s objective as to creatively and practically carry out the central CDSJ objective and advance it to the highest possible level. Guided by the UMass Amherst approach to CDSJ issues, our team formulated the following goal and objectives for the college.
Goal: To build on the long history of attention to community, diversity and social justice on campus and push it forward, especially by expanding that tradition in the College of Natural Resources and the Environment.
Objectives:
-
Translate the formal views and ideas for CDSJ into action plans, and turn the verbal and written promises into practical steps and procedures that can be implemented.
-
Further diversify the composition of the contributing groups (students, faculty, and staff) through recruitment, retention, and recognition. Improve the dynamics of the relationships among groups and individuals within them through training on CDSJ issues.
-
Go beyond achieving diversity as “statistics” to building a cohesive, harmonious, and productive community where all feel included, appreciated, protected, and safe through improved communication, joint planning, and recognition of the efforts of individuals.
