Before your student arrives on campus for orientation there are some important things to take care of. We put together this checklist of important deadlines and requirements for you and your student so you can begin your first year at UMass as smoothly as possible.
For a list of important to-dos and deadlines year round and throughout your student’s undergraduate career, visit the Office of Parent Services’ Parent Checklist
Register for Parent and Family Orientation
Orientation is only mandatory for students, however, we have a lot of valuable information to offer you! Once your student has registered for their session, you can sign up online as well.
Visit the Office of Parent Services Website
The Office of Parent Services is dedicated to helping families with their transition to the university. Our office is here to answer questions, provide timely information and updates, and assist parents and guardians with questions or concerns.
Sign up for our Parent Newsletter
We know you play an important role in your student's transition to UMass Amherst, so we want you to stay informed about developments on campus. During the school year we send out a monthly electronic newsletter that includes important dates and deadlines as well as a brief snapshot of what is happening on campus. You can sign up to receive our newsletter here.

Ask Your Student to Complete the FERPA Waiver in SPIRE
If you are assisting your student by paying for school, they need to give you permission to discuss their financial records (Bursar, Financial Aid, and Residential Life accounts) by completing the Federal Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) waiver on SPIRE.
Become an Authorized Payer
Your student can sign you up to be an authorized payer, giving you access to their bills. This can be done through the university’s online payment system, QuikPAY under the ‘Authorized Payers’ tab on the left hand side.
Help Keep Your Student On-Track
We encourage our students to check their UMass email and SPIRE accounts regularly throughout the summer so they can stay informed about important To Dos before they arrive on campus. We also offer a Student Checklist to keep them a step ahead of the game. Encourage your student to check his/her UMass accounts and be aware of any approaching deadlines.
