Job Qualifications

  • Availability some evenings (Mon-Thurs) between the hours of 5:00 PM-9:00 PM
  • Current UMass Amherst undergraduate in good academic standing with a minimum GPA of 2.5
  • Successful past work experiences, enthusiasm, and ability to think on your feet and relate quickly and comfortably to new people
  • Interest in speaking with accepted students and their families over the phone, to answer their question and address their concerns
  • Good listening skills and ability to objectively address the questions asked
  • Availability to attend mandatory training sessions before starting the position

Job Description

General statement of duties:
Responsible for calling accepted students to welcome them to the UMass Amherst community, answer any questions or concerns they might have, make appropriate referrals when needed, and inform them of upcoming events.

Supervision:
Phone operators work under the supervision of and are accountable to the Director of the New Students Orientation. Additional assistance and direction will be available to staff from other administrative staff.

Phone Operator Responsibilities

  • Participate in training and planning, as well as any on-the-job training sessions, staff meetings, and evaluative sessions
  • Call target number of assigned accepted students per session to meet a weekly goal
  • Learn academic, housing, financial, and social information covered in the training sessions
  • Answer questions and address the concerns of accepted students
  • Make the proper referrals to other departments if you don't know the answer to a question
