New England Public Radio (NEPR) will mark the beginning of construction of its new downtown Springfield facility with a groundbreaking ceremony at the historic Fuller Block Building. The 17,000-square-foot space will house four radio production suites, a technical operations center and music library as well as office space. The opening of the facility is planned for spring 2014.Martin Miller, CEO and general manager of NEPR, will be joined at the event by Congressman Richard Neal, Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno, Elizabeth Cardona, director of Gov. Deval Patrick’s office in Springfield and John Kennedy, vice chancellor for university relations at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
Funding for the facility was raised as part of the New England Public Radio Foundation’s 50th anniversary capital campaign for WFCR. Of the $5.5 million raised to date, $3,990,000 has been designated for facilities, leaving $1.4 million to be raised to fully fund the Springfield project.
