Fluorescent Microscopy is the Topic of First Gupta Lecture at UMass Amherst on November 19

AMHERST, Mass. – Christopher Salthouse, the new Dev and Linda Gupta Assistant Professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, will deliver the first Gupta Lecture on Thursday, Nov. 19, at 4 p.m. in the Massachusetts Room of the Mullins Center. A reception follows the talk. The event is free and open to the public.
The title of Salthouse’s lecture is “How to Implant a Fluorescence Microscope.” He will explain the role of fluorescence microscopy in medicine and how this might expand, as well as how integrated circuits which have revolutionized computation will solve biomedical problems related to future development of implantable fluorescence microscopes.
Salthouse received three degrees including a doctorate in electrical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. While there, he developed integrated circuits for cochlear implants that allow the deaf to hear. As a research fellow at Massachusetts General Hospital, he developed new fluorescence imaging instruments. In August, 2009, he joined the electrical and computer engineering faculty at UMass Amherst, where he founded the Biomedical Electronics Laboratory.
The Dev and Linda Gupta Professorship is an endowment funded through the generosity of Dev and Linda Gupta that supports a new faculty member who brings fresh ideas and areas of inquiry to electrical and computer engineering. The support is specifically intended to encourage risk-taking and entrepreneurial pursuits.
Dev Gupta, who earned his doctorate in electrical engineering from UMass Amherst in 1977, is an adjunct professor in the electrical and computer engineering department. He has built a reputation as an expert in broadband and network access infrastructure technology. His company, NewLANS, is working on the development of high speed wireless data transmission. Previously he founded Narad Networks, a privately held provider of broadband IP infrastructure services.
