Just in Time for Holiday/UMass Commencement Weekend: New Traffic Webcams on Route 9 at Bay Road

May 21, 2009

AMHERST, Mass. – Just in time to help travelers negotiate heavy Memorial Day weekend traffic more effectively, the University of Massachusetts Amherst’s Regional Traveler Information Center (RTIC) has installed new, traffic-monitoring cameras on Route 9 at Bay Road in Hadley. The cameras offer online, real-time views looking south on Bay Road and in both directions on Route 9, and can be viewed at www.MassTraveler.com.

“That particular intersection is one where everyone wants to be able to see traffic flow and now they can,” says Kris Stetson, RTIC business manager. “We aimed to have the new cameras installed in time for this busy weekend, and we’re delighted to have succeeded. It means travelers can more precisely plan their travel now, through that often-congested area east of the Coolidge Bridge.” Long Radio of Hadley is providing Internet connectivity for the new traffic webcams.

In addition to the new webcams, RTIC operates a network of other traffic cameras online for viewing Route 2A in Orange and Athol, Route 116 in Deerfield and Sunderland, on Commonwealth Avenue on the UMass Amherst campus, on Route 9 in Hadley and the Exit 19 off ramp from I-91 in Northampton. The RTIC website also offers construction updates, traffic times, tourism and event information, bus tracking and other advisories that affect travel.

The RTIC, which is managed by the UMass Amherst Transportation Center, with operational and facility support of UMass Transit Services, is a joint venture of UMass Amherst and MassHighway, in collaboration with the regional planning agencies of Western Massachusetts and the Pioneer Valley Transit Authority.
