Oct. 16, 2006
AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts Amherst will host its largest-ever Fall Open House for prospective students and their families on Saturday, Oct. 21. Events include meetings with admissions and financial aid counselors, information sessions, college meetings, campus tours, and visits to labs, classrooms, studios and panel discussions. A registration and resource fair will begin the day’s activities at 9 a.m. in the Mullins Center concourse.
Jeanne Horrigan, director of the new student program, says she expects more than 5,000 people will attend from 20 states ranging from California to Florida to Minnesota. Horrigan says students from as far away as Japan are registered to attend as well. The event coincides with Homecoming weekend on campus.
Michael Gargano Jr., vice chancellor for student affairs and campus life, will offer welcoming remarks at 10 a.m., and there will also be comments from Kevin Kelly, director of admissions, and student Nina Saini. In addition, musical entertainment will be provided by the Jazz I Ensemble under the direction of Jeff Holmes. Starting at 11:15 a.m., there will be meetings held in various campus venues for the schools and colleges that parents and prospective students can attend. Representatives from the admissions and financial aid offices will also be available for questions and information.
A model dormitory room will be open in Knowlton Hall for visitors to view from noon to 3 p.m. Students will lead tours from the steps of the Student Union every half hour starting at noon and ending at 3 p.m.
“The Fall Open House is one of the most significant weekends at the University of Massachusetts Amherst,” says Gargano. “It provides an exceptional atmosphere for prospective students and their families to experience first-hand the spirit, energy and momentum of our campus community.”
