Environmental and health activist filmmaker Annie Leonard is the keynote speaker for Earth Day on the University of Massachusetts Amherst campus on Monday, April 22 at 7 p.m. in Bowker Auditorium. She is the creator of the animated short documentary film, “The Story of Stuff,” which has been viewed over 10 million times worldwide.

UMass Amherst Announces Ambitious 'Greening the Campus' Goals

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts Amherst Chancellor Kumble Subbaswamy recently accepted from his environmental advisory committee an updated Climate Action Plan that outlines ambitious goals for the campus, focused not only on energy efficiency and reduced emissions, but on raising sustainability literacy, student participation and integrating green principles into all of campus life, notably academic courses.
 
The 60-page report updates the campus’s first action plan released in 2010, which identified strategies for reaching carbon neutrality over the next 37 years, by 2050.

UMass Amherst Students to Plant Trees in Downtown Amherst

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts Amherst students will be planting trees in Sweetser Park and in front of the Amherst Police Department on Main Street on Sunday, April 21 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., in collaboration with Amherst’s Department of Public Works.
 
The Sweetser Project is part of the Positive Presence Initiative of the university’s Off Campus Student Services. Positive Presence provides students opportunities to participate in various community service projects.

UMass Amherst Students to Be Awarded Humanitarian Citations for Bone Marrow and Stem Cell Donation Efforts

AMHERST, Mass. – The national organization Delete Blood Cancer will recognize the lifesaving efforts of University of Massachusetts Amherst students who have registered as bone marrow and stem cell donors by presenting them Humanitarian Citations on Thursday, April 18at 8 p.m. in the Amherst Room on the 10th floor of the Campus Center.
 
Michael Guglielmo, the ambassador of Delete Blood Cancer for New England, will present the awards to several individuals affiliated with UMass Amherst Delete Blood Cancer, which has registered 4,082 students, 19 of whom made life-saving stem cell donations,

UMass Amherst Commencement Weekend Begins May 10 with Undergraduate Ceremony at McGuirk Alumni Stadium

AMHERST, Mass. – Undergraduate Commencement at the University of Massachusetts Amherst will feature a keynote address by Kenneth I. Chenault, chairman and CEO of American Express Company, to the 5,500 graduates and their families and friends. The event is on Friday, May 10 at 5 p.m. in McGuirk Alumni Stadium and will be held rain or shine.

Chenault will also receive an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree at the ceremony.

UMass Amherst Chancellor Subbaswamy Praises Proposed House Budget that Boosts Investment in Higher Education
