Eight UMass Amherst Scholars Awarded Fulbrights for Study Abroad

AMHERST, Mass. – Eight scholars from the University of Massachusetts Amherst have been selected to participate in the prestigious Fulbright U.S. Student Program.
 
The competitive program selects current university students and recent graduates for their academic success and leadership potential and supports a year of study abroad. Participants teach and conduct research with the opportunity to exchange ideas, observe political, economic and cultural institutions, and embark on joint ventures in foreign lands.

Noted Writers to Give Readings During Juniper Summer Writing Institute at UMass Amherst

AMHERST, Mass. – The Juniper Summer Writing Institute at the University of Massachusetts Amherst will host seven nights of poetry and fiction readings by acclaimed faculty and writers in residence from June 23-29.
 
All readings begin at 7:30 p.m. in 135 Integrated Sciences Building. Readings are open to the public for a suggested donation of $5-10.

UMass Amherst Sunwheel and Sky-Watching Events Mark the Summer Solstice on June 20-21

AMHERST, Mass. – The public is invited to witness sunrise and sunset associated with the summer solstice among the standing stones of the UMass Amherst Sunwheel on Thursday, June 20 at 7:30 p.m. for sunset and on Friday, June 21 at 5 a.m. for sunrise. These events will mark the astronomical change of season when days are longest and nights are shortest in the Northern Hemisphere. Rain cancels the events.  
 
At these hour-long gatherings, UMass Amherst astronomers Judith Young and Stephen Schneider will discuss the astronomical cause of the sun’s solstice or standstill.

UMass Amherst Offers ‘Permaculture Your Campus’ Conference

AMHERST, Mass. – As part of campus-wide sustainability efforts, the University of Massachusetts Amherst is hosting its second annual “Permaculture Your Campus” conference on June 23–26. Discount registration is available for students, faculty and staff from other universities, food service managers, chefs and sustainability coordinators who wish to attend.
 
Kicking off the conference will be urban revitalization strategist Majora Carter, co-founder and CEO of StartUpSouthBronx, who will deliver the keynote speech, “Home(town) Security,” at 7 p.m.

Brown’s closest theoretical competition would come from former Congressman Joseph Kennedy II, who wouldbe in a virtual tie with Brown, 42-41.

AMHERST, Mass. – The results of a new statewide UMass Poll released today by the University of Massachusetts Amherst shows Democratic U.S. Representative Edward Markey with a strong 11-point lead over Republican Gabriel Gomez among likely voters in advance of the Massachusetts special U.S. Senate election scheduled for June 25. Markey and Gomez are contesting the open Senate seat created by John Kerry’s ascension to Secretary of State.

Unauthorized Intrusion into Health Data Reported by UMass Amherst

AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts Amherst is notifying clients of the university’s Center for Language, Speech, and Hearing that their protected health information was possibly revealed after a workstation was inadvertently infected with a malware program.
 
The malware infection was detected on April 5, 2013. A subsequent investigation by the university’s Office of Information Technologies found no evidence suggesting or indicating that any data was copied from the workstation.

UMass Amherst Climate Scientist Raymond Bradley to Receive Honorary Doctorate from Ontario’s Queen’s University

AMHERST, Mass. – Climate scientist Raymond Bradley, director of the Climate System Research Center at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, will receive an honorary Doctor of Science degree from Queen’s University in ceremonies to be held June 12 in Kingston, Ontario.
 
Described as “a celebrated global warming whistleblower known for championing integrity in science,” Bradley joins actress Glenn Close as one of two honorary degree recipients from the United States.

Detective Lieutenant Ian Cyr Named UMPD Deputy Chief of Operations

AMHERST, Mass. – Ian Cyr, detective lieutenant in the University of Massachusetts Amherst Police Department (UMPD), has been chosen to be the department’s deputy chief of operations, Chief John Horvath has announced.
 
“Lieutenant Cyr participated in an extensive search process that included numerous interviews with members of the campus community, as well as outside law enforcement professionals,” said Horvath. “He possesses a unique combination of education, training, and experience that will afford him the opportunity to succeed as the department’s deputy chief of operations.
