Raymond Roger Mongeau, 86, of Ware, a retired Physical Plant carpenter, died Sept. 13.

Born in Ware Nov. 28, 1930, he enlisted in the Navy in 1948 and served with the rank of BSM 3rd Class, on an amphibious landing craft. After serving, he returned to school, graduated from Palmer High School and earned his associate degree from Fisher College.

After working as a carpenter for the Springfield Carpenters Union Local 107, he joined UMass Amherst in 1983, retiring as a carpenter in the Physical Plant in1995.

He was a deputy sheriff for Hampshire County.

He leaves his wife of 61 years, Jean A. (Wozniak) Mongeau; his daughters Kathy Neffinger and her husband Frank, and Marcia Vadnais and her husband Joseph; and his sister Gloria Desforges and her husband Robert.

Memorial donations may be made to either: St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
