AMHERST, Mass.– Researchers at the University of Massachusetts Amherst’s School of Public Health and Health Sciences are seeking healthy postmenopausal women to participate in a study of dietary flaxseed to see if it can lower a woman’s risk of developing breast cancer.
Susan Sturgeon, associate professor of public health, is conducting the study and is seeking women from the local area who meet certain health and physical requirements to participate in the research.
Study subjects are required to consume one tablespoon of provided flaxseed per day for six weeks, come to UMass Amherst one time for an introductory visit and collect breast fluid twice during the course of the study, Sturgeon says. The fluid will be collected using a gentle-suction device similar to those used by breastfeeding women. Women may choose to self-collect breast fluid at home or have it collected by a nurse at University Health Services.
Qualified women individuals need to plan on participating in the study for two months. Financial compensation will be provided, Sturgeon says.
