AMHERST, Mass. – University officials are evaluating an intrusion into the computer network of University Health Services (UHS). The University is assessing the scope of the incident to determine what, if any, files were compromised.
The incident occurred April 11, and, after an initial investigation of the remote intrusion, the University decided to shut down the network, which includes 150 workstations. Since the event occurred, UHS has remained open and provided continuous patient care by maintaining paper records. To date, about 30 workstations have been returned to service and officials project that the entire network will be operating within the next week.
Most personal medical records at UHS are currently maintained on paper. The workstations in question contained limited patient information. The University has launched a detailed evaluation of the incident to find out if any of the files were accessed during the intrusion, and will keep the community advised of its findings.
