March 27, 2008

AMHERST, Mass. – Professor Howard A. Peelle of the School of Education at the University of Massachusetts Amherst has been awarded a Fulbright Senior Specialist grant to visit the Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (JAIST) during May and June.

During his six-week visit, Peelle will interact with computer science educators, review requirements for 80 courses in JAIST’s master’s and Ph.D. programs and offer recommendations for advancing students’ mathematics education. He will also lead seminars on teaching mathematics with J computing software.

JAIST is a new independent national university located in the city of Nomi in the Ishikawa Prefecture, with a satellite campus in Tokyo. Dedicated to graduate research and education in science and technology, it accepts students from around the world and provides them with a broad background so they can be prepared to work effectively at the frontiers of specialized technical fields.

The Fulbright Senior Specialist grant is awarded by the U.S. State Department Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs through the Council for International Exchange of Scholars in Washington, D.C.

Peelle is the founder of the doctoral concentration in mathematics and science education in the UMass Amherst School of Education’s department of teacher education and curriculum studies, where he has been on the faculty since 1970. In 2003, he received a Fulbright Scholar award to lecture and conduct research in Malaysia.
