AMHERST, Mass. – The journalism program at the University of Massachusetts Amherst is hosting a panel discussion, “Campaign 2008: The Endless Cycle?” about political reporting during the current presidential campaign. The event is Wednesday, March 26 from 4-5:30 p.m., in room 168C of the UMass Campus Center. It is free and open to the public.
The event will be moderated by Steve Fox, who recently joined the UMass journalism faculty from washingtonpost.com. Fox developed and teaches many of the journalism program’s multi-media offerings, as well as political reporting and sports writing. The panelists include Jill Lawrence, national political correspondent for USA Today, Mark Stencel, deputy publisher of Governing magazine, and Mary Carey, an adjunct faculty member in the journalism program who has covered state and local politics for the Daily Hampshire Gazette.
Lawrence began her career in 1977, working for United Press International in Charleston, W.Va. She has covered every presidential campaign since 1988 and won a National Headliner Award in 1995 for her Associated Press columns about Washington on the Clinton administration.
Stencel previously worked as managing editor at Congressional Quarterly, where he helped oversee daily news coverage of Congress in print and online. He is the co-author of “Peepshow: Media and Politics in Age of Scandal,” and “On the Line: The New Road to the White House,” written with CNN’s Larry King.
Carey has covered state and local politics for the Gazette for several years and also teaches news writing and reporting at UMass.
This event is funded by the Howard Ziff Fund, established by alumni to honor retired professor Howard Ziff, who was responsible for the early development of the journalism program.
