Thousands to Enjoy Live Lobster Feast Hosted On Halloween by UMass Amherst Dining Services

Oct. 30, 2007

AMHERST, Mass. – Dining Services at the University of Massachusetts Amherst will hold its sixth annual Halloween “Tricks, Treats ’n’ More” dinner from 5 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 31. All dining halls on campus will participate in treating more than 13,000 students to Maine live lobster, clam chowder, strip steak, locally grown vegetables and apple cider.

Dining Services Director Ken Toong expects to serve 12,500 pounds of lobster, which he says classifies UMass Amherst as serving more lobster at one sitting than any other college on the East Coast, based on information from the Maine Lobstermen’s Association.

During their meal, students can participate in pumpkin painting and costume contests. UMass Amherst knapsacks will be given out to the first 2,000 attendees. There will also be magicians and fortune tellers to entertain students and guests.

“With the popularity of lobster,” said Toong, “this year we ordered an additional 1,000 lobsters. I think our staff and students are looking forward to this. It should be a timely break from mid-term studies.”

To cover the event, the press should directly contact Martha Monaghan of Dining Services at 413/577-0302.
