Multimedia Innovators in the Field of Journalism to Speak at UMass Amherst’s Memorial Hall Oct. 1

Sept. 27, 2007

AMHERST, Mass. – Three innovators in the field of journalism will speak at the University of Massachusetts Amherst in a panel discussion titled, “The New New Journalism: Challenges and Opportunities in Multi-Media Reporting,” on Monday, Oct. 1, from 7-8:30 p.m. in Memorial Hall. The event begins with a pizza reception at 6:15 p.m.

The panel is part of the third annual Journalism Program Lecture Series on Broadcast and the Media. The series, which is funded by David and Teena Kantor, has brought prominent journalists and editors to the Amherst campus to speak about special topics in journalism. David Kantor is a 1979 alumnus of UMass Amherst.

Panel speakers include Chet Rhodes, a news video editor for washingtonpost.com; Patrick Stiegman, an executive editor/producer for ESPN.com; and Emily Sweeney, a staff reporter at the Boston Globe. Each speaker will discuss their experiences integrating multimedia components into their work.

Rhodes is leading a project to train print journalists at the Washington Post in shooting video for the paper’s Web site, washingtonpost.com, and he oversees the editing of daily news video. Before joining washingtonpost.com, Rhodes taught for 10 years as an instructor of broadcast journalism at the University of Maryland’s College of Journalism. He also worked as a radio news director in local radio and as an editor and chief engineer with the UPI radio network.

Stiegman is vice president and executive editor/producer for ESPN.com. Stiegman, who joined the site in April 2004, oversees ESPN.com’s public and premium sports content, including news, commentary, analysis and community. His role includes collaborative strategic planning and content development across ESPN Digital Media. He oversees the award-winning ESPN Insider and was named vice president in November 2006. He added the duties of executive producer in June 2007.

Emily Sweeney is a staff reporter at the Boston Globe and president of the New England chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. She is responsible for the Globe’s first video blog, and this June, one of her videos was shown at the American Film Institute in Los Angeles as part of the first annual Pixelodeon Festival. A true Bostonian, she has won three Boston Globe Impact Awards and many others.
