UMass Amherst Vice Provost for Research Awards Spring 2007 Research Leadership in Action Grants

AMHERST, Mass. – Seven faculty members at the University of Massachusetts Amherst have received a total of $43,000 from the university’s vice provost for research through the Spring 2007 Research Leadership in Action grant competition. Funds will be used as program support for conferences to be held at UMass Amherst in 2007 and 2008.

Recipients include Sonia Alvarez, political science ($25,000), David Buchanan and Lisa Wexler, public health ($5,000), Wayne Burleson and Sandip Kundu, electrical and computer engineering ($3,000), Sarina Ergas, civil and environmental engineering ($5,000) and Massimo Fischetti, electrical and computer engineering ($5,000).

Recipients will organize and host the following conferences to be held at UMass Amherst:

Sonia Alvarez is organizing “Interrogating the Civil Society Agenda: Frontiers in the Study of Social Movements and 21st Century Cultural and Political Transformations.” Scheduled for April 2008, the conference is an annual meeting of researchers from universities throughout the Americas involved in studying social movements.

Massimo Fischetti is organizing the “12th International Workshop on Computation Electronics,” scheduled for Oct. 8-10, 2007. The workshop will serve as an international forum for discussion of current and future trends in computational electronics.

David Buchanan and Lisa Wexler will host “Post-Colonial Prospects for Indigenous Circumpolar Peoples: Research Priorities in Alaska, Canada, Norway, Greenland and Russia.” The conference, tentatively scheduled for March 2008, will present current findings and lay out a research agenda to identify cultural resources that will help reduce disproportionate rates of suicide and alcohol and substance abuse in these countries.

Sarina Ergas will host the 2008 International Water Association’s North American Membrane Research Conference. The conference, scheduled for Aug. 10-13, 2008 will present advances in treating drinking water and wastewater with membrane technologies as well as new membrane materials and processes.

Wayne Burleson and Sandip Kundu are hosting a review of leading edge semiconductor research Oct. 24-25, 2007. “Integrated Circuits and Systems Science Contract Review” will showcase research from 15 universities sponsored by contracts from the Semiconductor Research Corporation, a group of leading firms that includes Intel, IBM, AMD, Freescale, LSI and Texas Instruments, among others.

The Research Leadership in Action Program is an internal grant competition sponsored by the UMass Amherst vice provost for research showcasing faculty leadership and promoting connections between university faculty, industry and other external partners. Grants are awarded twice a year in the spring and fall.
