AMHERST, Mass. – Several University of Massachusetts Amherst faculty members have been involved in notable professional activities in recent weeks:
Yeonhwa Park, assistant professor in the department of food science, has received a 2007 Future Leader Award from the International Life Science Institute (ILSI) North America.
The award, which includes $30,000 in research support over two years, is given annually to promising nutrition and food scientists. Only two awards are given per year.
Park, who joined the UMass Amherst faculty in 2004, holds the F.J. Francis Endowed Chair. Her research focuses on functional foods with bioactive food components, the biologically beneficial effects of conjugated linoleic acid, obesity and controlling acrylamide formation in food.

English professor Peter Gizzi’s latest poetry collection, “The Outernationale,” is being published this month by the Wesleyan University Press.
Gizzi, who completed the book while on a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2005-06, said the volume contains 34 poems, including six long poems. “Without being overtly political I would say the poems are elegiac and bittersweet and deal with daily life in a difficult era for Americans and for our language,” he said.
He joined the UMass Amherst faculty in 2001 and teaches in the MFA Program for Poets & Writers.

A research paper by Anna Nagurney, professor of Operations Management, and doctoral students Zugang Liu and Trisha Woolley has been selected as the lead article in the inaugural issue of the International Journal of Sustainable Transportation.
The paper, “Sustainable Supply Chain and Transportation Networks,” develops a bridge between sustainable supply chains and transportation networks and proves that the former can be transformed into and solved as the latter.
The first issue of the new quarterly journal will be published in March by Taylor and Francis.
