Dining Services at UMass Amherst Earn Second Place Award in National Food Services Competition

May 10, 2006

AMHERST, Mass. – The National Association of College and University Food Services has announced that the UMass Amherst Dining Services received second place for the 2006 Loyal E. Horton Dining Awards in the multiple concepts category.

This year, Dining Services focused its entry on its commitment to healthier food choice initiatives and themed specials.

The criteria for the competition was based on menu selection, merchandising, presentation, marketing and nutritional soundness. Seven hundred member schools participated in the national contest. This marks the seventh award Dining Services has received from the association.

“I am proud of our achievement,” said Ken Toong, director of university dining and retail food services. “Earning second place in the most competitive category is no small task. With the newly renovated Berkshire Dining Commons opening in the fall, our program will be even stronger.”

Award presentations will be made this July in Toronto, Canada.
