AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts Amherst is hosting educational, cultural and social events as part of its celebration of Black History Month in February. Among the highlights are a one-man show “99Acts” by Mark Cryer, the Harlem Renaissance Ball, a benefit concert for Hurricane Katrina relief, and an evening with the Afro-American studies department. A listing of events follows:
THURSDAY, FEB. 2
“Exploring the Lives of Black Leaders of the Past,” a discussion and reception with John H. Bracey, professor of Afro-American studies; 5:30 p.m. in the Shirley Graham Du Bois Study Center in room 203 of New Africa House. Admission is free.
“99 Acts”- ‘A One-man Show: 99 Questions you’ve always wanted to ask African Americans, but were afraid to ask: an open dialog about race’ by actor Mark Cryer; 7 p.m. in the Campus Center Auditorium. MONDAY, FEB. 6
“Journey of the African American Athlete,” a discussion with Stephen Jefferson, professor of sport management; 7 p.m. in the Cape Cod Lounge. Admission is free. Movie and discussion. Sponsors: Multicultural Student Support Services, Malcolm X, and Sylvan Cultural centers.
FRIDAY, FEB. 10
“Telling Our Story,” cultural presentation from the African Diaspora: Black History Month Showcase; 7 p.m. in the Student Union Ballroom. Free admission with the purchase of an AIDS wristband. Sponsors: Members of the Black Student Union. (For information, contact members of the BSU.)
SUNDAY, FEB. 12
Sunday Morning Worship Service, “The Role of the Black Church in the Struggle for Equality and Justice”; 11 a.m. in Campus Center 101. Admission is free. Sponsors: BASIC, Malcolm X and Sylvan Cultural centers.

TUESDAY, FEB. 14

WEDNESDAY, FEB. 15

An Evening with the W.E.B. Du Bois department of Afro-American studies, 7 p.m., Memorial Hall. Admission is free. Music by Steven Tracy with the King Bees and the James Carroll Ensemble; panels on current issues in Afro-American history and culture with faculty and graduate students; media presentation, book signings and reception with refreshments. Sponsors: W.E.B. Du Bois department of Afro-American studies.
Platanos and Collard Greens: Where cultures and passions collide, a Between-the-Lines Play by Doni Comas. Directed by David Lamb, adjunct professor, John Jay College, New York, New York; 8 p.m. in Bowker Auditorium. Admission is free.

A Trip to Harlem N.Y.: visitations to the N.Y. Historical Society Museum; The N.Y.
