DATE: Monday, April 30, 2012
TIME: 7 p.m.
PLACE: Bowker Auditorium, Stockbridge Hall, UMass Amherst
The University Chorale and Women’s Choir, with 100 students from the Springfield Public Schools District Magnet Schools Chorus, will be performing in Bowker Auditorium.
The event will feature schoolchildren from Springfield grade, middle and high schools along with members of the two UMass Amherst-based groups.
This will also be the first public performance of the Springfield Public Schools District Magnet Schools Chorus, which includes students from grades 3 through 12 from six magnet schools in the city. The schools are the High School of Science and Technology; Springfield Central High School; Van Sickle Middle School; Alfred G. Zanetti Montessori Magnet School; Elias Brookings Elementary School, and the Rebecca M. Johnson Elementary School.
They will be singing the original song, "We’ve Got the Power," composed by Steven Schoenberg, the composer-in-residence with the six schools, with lyrics by Jane Schoenberg. The song has evolved to include musical and lyrical ideas from children involved with the project.
"We are delighted to host these students at UMass," says Tony Thornton, director of choral activities at UMass Amherst. "We are grateful to all who helped make their visit possible."
