*** MEDIA ADVISORY***

DATE: Thursday, July 21, 2011

TIME: 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

PLACE: Joseph Troll Turf Research Center
23 River Rd., South Deerfield

Protection of water resources is a primary goal of research by the University of Massachusetts Amherst’s turf program, and this year’s Turf Research Field Day will introduce the latest in a series of on-site projects with that focus. A specially engineered and newly constructed wetland for the purpose of reclaiming and recycling equipment wash water will be featured. This new study seeks to create and evaluate a sustainable, green technology with the potential to significantly decrease energy use, recycle water and prevent materials such as fertilizers from entering the environment.

The annual UMass Turf Research Field Day highlights the wide range of research projects currently taking place at UMass Amherst’s Joseph Troll Turf Research Center as well as on research being conducted at other locations by UMass turf program faculty, staff and graduate students.

The Field Day is an annual event designed for the professional turfgrass industry - public- and private-sector managers and business owners involved in the care of golf courses, municipal parks, school properties and other land as well as those who provide residential lawn care and landscape services. Environmental sustainability, water protection and emerging techniques and methods are explored in the research projects at the heart of the Field Day.
