UMass Permaculture and Auxiliary Services invites students, faculty, staff, the public and the media to help design one of the first student-led university permaculture gardens in the nation to supply fresh produce to the campus dining commons, on Saturday, March 5, from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. inside Franklin Dining Commons on Stockbridge Road.
This type of workshop is called a design charrette, according to organizer Ryan Harb, UMass Amherst sustainability specialist, who is a certified permaculture designer and instructor. A charrette is a short, intense collaborative session during which a group of designers explores design solutions for a particular site. The goal is to bring diverse perspectives together to propose on a model for future campus permaculture gardens throughout the nation. The UMass Amherst permaculture garden is intended to be a sustainable, highly productive and low maintenance garden. In addition to producing fresh food, it will offer educational opportunities for students interested in sustainability.
Space is limited; registration is required by March 2 by e-mailing Events.Permaculture@gmail.com

The event is hosted by Auxiliary Services and the UMass Permaculture Committee. Light refreshments will be served.
