Students returning to the University of Massachusetts Amherst will be moving into residence halls on Sunday, Sept. 5 and Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 6 beginning at 9 a.m. On Sunday, the Class of 2014, approximately 4,500 students will move in. Members of the news media can speak to campus housing officials by contacting residence hall staff. Eddie Hull, executive director of Housing and Residence Life, will be available for interviews.

Also on Sept. 6 from 4-7 p.m. at the Fine Arts Plaza will be the Welcome UMass Amherst Green Barbecue. Chancellor Robert C. Holub kicks off the school year and welcomes the class of 2014. This event features compostable plates and local produce.

It will also feature 300 campus volunteers working with 50 chefs to create the world record for the longest sushi California roll. Among other back-to-school events, on Wednesday, Sept. 8, the Hampshire Mall will be open to UMass Amherst students from 9 p.m. to midnight. Campus buses will make shuttle runs between the mall and residence areas every 10 minutes.
