Daylong Program to Honor Retiring UMass Amherst History Professor Joyce Berkman for Half-Century of Service

AMHERST, Mass – History professor Joyce Avrech Berkman, who is retiring after 48 years of service to the University of Massachusetts Amherst, will be honored Friday, May 3 in the Cape Cod Lounge with a series of presentations on women’s history followed by a reception and dinner.
 
Berkman, who is also adjunct professor of women, gender, sexuality studies, teaches courses in U.S., British and European women’s history, oral history and the history of reproductive rights in the U.S.

AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts Amherst is celebrating its 150th birthday and is asking supporters to be part of the festivities by making a gift to the university during its first-ever fundraising campaign driven by social media.
 
The 36-hour UMassGives campaign will be launched at noon on Founders Day, Monday, April 29. “The goal is to increase the number of donors among alumni and other supporters, who will be invited to contribute to areas most meaningful to them,” says Sarah Sligo, executive director of annual giving.

Area Students Help Celebrate Diversity in Nursing at UMass Amherst April 25

AMHERST, Mass. – More than 300 students from Springfield, Holyoke, Northampton and Amherst are scheduled to attend the first annual Achieving Diversity in Nursing Celebration and Conference to be held Thursday, April 25 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Campus Center Auditorium at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
 
The keynote speaker will be Judy Jones of Springfield, the daughter of the late Springfield City Councilor Morris Jones. Jones attended the UMass Amherst School of Nursing where she received her baccalaureate, master’s and doctoral degrees.

Activists Gather at UMass to Chart Newly-Balanced Vision for U.S. Economy

AMHERST, Mass. – Hedrick Smith, author of “Who Stole the American Dream,” along with a special pre-recorded video address by U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, will kick off a three-day summit conference on corporate “rules change” on Friday, May 3 at 7:30 p.m. in Bowker Auditorium at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
 
“Rules Change: Resetting the Playing Field for Corporations, People and Democracy,” is a three-day gathering organized by the UMass Donahue Institute at the request of U.S. Rep. James P. McGovern and four other non-profit policy groups.

UMass Amherst Launches New Online Training to Help Students Make Good Decisions When Moving Off Campus

AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts Amherst has launched a new online training program for students who are moving into off-campus housing to help them become more responsible and successful tenants. The program emphasizes personal finances, rental rules and regulations, and information about responsible behavior and how to be good neighbors.
 
The Moving Off Campus OWL (Online Web-based Learning) training began operation April 5 and is available to UMass Amherst students and local landlords.
