The University of Massachusetts Amherst is celebrating Homecoming from Oct. 19-28. Several public events are free and open to the public. They include:

On Friday, Oct. 19, at 5 p.m., starting from Northeast Quadrangle.This is acommunity service event focused on a large clothing drive for new or lightly worn clothing.

UMass Amherst Inaugurates Institute for Social Science Research

AMHERST, Mass. – The College of Social and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Massachusetts Amherst will mark the launch of its Institute for Social Science Research (ISSR) on Friday, Oct. 26 at 3:30 p.m. in the Massachusetts Room of the Mullins Center.

ISSR is the newest iteration of a research initiative that began in 1962 as the Population and Research Institute, a joint venture of the sociology and anthropology department and the agricultural economics department. In 1972, it was renamed the Social and Demographic Research Institute (SADRI).

UMass Amherst Pastry Chef is Raisin’ the Profile of Cinnamon Swirl Bread With Award-Winning Baked Delight

AMHERST, Mass. – Some of best raisin bread in the country may be closer than you think.

A cinnamon swirl raisin bread prepared by pastry chef Pam Adams of the Dining Services Bakeshop at the University of Massachusetts Amherst has received the grand prize in the commercial category of the fifth annual America's Best Raisin Bread contest.

The event was held at the American Institute of Baking and organized in conjunction with Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kan. on Oct. 13. Altogether, there were 36 contestants in the artisanal, commercial and breakfast categories.

Fountain Explores State Development in Digital Age as UMass Amherst’s Distinguished Faculty Lectures Begin Oct. 24

AMHERST, Mass. – Political scientist Jane E. Fountain of the Center for Public Policy and Administration will lead off the 2012-13 Distinguished Faculty Lecture Series at the University of Massachusetts Amherst on Wednesday, Oct. 24. Fountain, who is the founder and director of the National Center for Digital Government, will discuss “Technological Change as a Variable in State Development.”

UMass Amherst Alumni Association To Make Special License Plate Designations At Minuteman Football Game This Saturday

AMHERST, Mass. – As orders for the UMass Amherst license plate continue to be collected, the UMass Amherst Alumni Association board of directors has announced special designations for UMass Amherst license plate #1 and plate #1863.

The board will present plate No. 1 to the UMass Amherst Office of the Chancellor in recognition of the support provided to the Alumni Association. Chancellor Kumble R. Subbaswamy will accept plate #1 during a special on-field ceremony at the Homecoming football game at Gillette Stadium on Saturday, Oct 20.

UMass Amherst Sleep Research May Offer New Treatment Directions for Age-Related Memory Decline

AMHERST, Mass. – Neuroscientist Rebecca Spencer at the University of Massachusetts Amherst recently launched sleep research in older adults that could provide new directions for treatment of age-related memory decline. If sleep patterns are at the root of declines in learning and memory for some tasks in older adults, “Perhaps we can design new treatments, adding those that enhance sleep, for people at this stage of life,” she says.

UMass Amherst Graduate School Has More International Students, Higher Selectivity and an Overall Increase in Applications

AMHERST, Mass. – This fall’s Graduate School class at the University of Massachusetts Amherst has an increased number of international students, a slightly higher overall number enrolled than last year, and reflects more selectivity in choosing who will pursue graduate degrees, university officials say.

The incoming class includes 1,586 students, up from 1,540 in the fall of 2011. Overall, the Graduate School has about 6,300 students pursuing advanced degrees, including those enrolled in online programs.

John McCarthy is vice provost for graduate education and dean of the Graduate School.

National Expert is Keynote Speaker at UMass Amherst Diabetes Seminar on Oct. 22

 

AMHERST, Mass. – Carl Caspersen, an expert in physical activity and diabetes at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Atlanta, will be the keynote speaker at a public diabetes prevention and management seminar and panel discussion at the University of Massachusetts Amherst’s Marriott Center on Monday, Oct. 22 from 3 to 5 p.m. A reception will follow.

UMass Amherst Neuroscientist Wins Prestigious National Award

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts Amherst neuroscientist Luke Remage-Healey will receive the 2012 Frank A. Beach Award from the Society for Behavioral Neuroendocrinology for work showing exceptional promise and significant contributions in the field of behavioral neuroendocrinology. Named after a founder of the field, the award will be presented during the society’s annual meeting this week in New Orleans. Remage-Healey will also give a lecture at the society’s annual meeting next year.
