Ceremony at UMass Amherst Celebrates Launch of New Academic Classroom Building Construction

AMHERST, Mass. – Officials at the University of Massachusetts today celebrated the launch of construction of a $95 million New Academic Classroom Building (NACB) that will provide state-of-the-art academic space and create a new hub of student activity near the Campus Center and Student Union. The event was held in the Student Union Ballroom, a location overlooking the construction site.
 
The four-story, 171,500-square-foot building located off North Pleasant Street at the north end of the Campus Pond is scheduled for completion in the spring of 2014.

International Programs Office at UMass Amherst Awards Financial Need and Merit Scholarships for Study Abroad

AMHERST, Mass. – This fall 40 University of Massachusetts Amherst students are venturing into the world to study with extra financial support through the campus’s International Programs Office. 
 
The Scott Academic Merit Scholarship was awarded to 15 students with a minimum 3.8 grade point average who are studying abroad during the 2012-13 academic year. The awards range from $500 to $1,000 for each student. The Scott Academic Merit Scholarship was given by former chancellor David Scott and his wife Kathleen, strong supporters of study abroad for UMass students.

Career Day at UMass Amherst Encourages Young Women to Become Engineers

More than 300 female high school students, teachers, and guidance counselors from across Massachusetts will travel to UMass Amherst to attend the annual Women in Engineering and Computing Career Day Conference.
 
At 10 a.m., participants will take part in one of four exercises designed to teach some of the fundamentals of engineering.

AMHERST, Mass. – The Mark H. McCormack Department of Sport Management at the University of Massachusetts Isenberg School of Management is celebrating its 40th Anniversary. Created in 1972, the McCormack Department of Sport Management is the second oldest of its kind in the world, and the largest and most academically diverse department in the nation. As part of celebrating the milestone, the department will host several alumni events on Saturday, Oct. 27 during Homecoming weekend.

UMass Amherst College of Engineering Annual Outstanding Alumni Awards Luncheon is Oct. 27

AMHERST, Mass. – The College of Engineering at the University of Massachusetts Amherst will hold its third annual Outstanding Alumni Awards Luncheon Oct. 27 during Homecoming Weekend. The event will be held from noon to 2:30 p.m. in the Amherst Room of the Campus Center. The awards luncheon is open to the public.

Nine individuals who epitomize the potential of an education at the College of Engineering through their exemplary accomplishments will be honored with outstanding junior and senior alumni awards.

Civil and Environmental Engineers at UMass Amherst to Dedicate New Structural Testing Facility on Oct. 27

AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts Amherst will dedicate the Robert B. Brack Structural Testing Facility on Tillson Way behind the campus police station on Saturday, Oct. 27 at 3 p.m. UMass Amherst Chancellor Kumble R. Subbaswamy will lead the ceremony, joined by various leaders from the College of Engineering.

The new test facility will allow researchers from the civil and environmental engineering department (CEE) to test full-size structural elements such as beams and girders. It is also intended to help the department by attracting top-flight students and sponsored research.

Four Arrested for Alleged Rape of UMass Amherst Student

AMHERST, Mass. – Four men from Pittsfield have been arrested for the rape of an 18-year-old student at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
 
The attack is alleged to have occurred in the victim’s residence hall room in the early morning hours of Saturday, Oct. 13, 2012. The alleged perpetrators are known to the victim and are not UMass Amherst students. Charged with rape are Emmanuel Bile, 18, Justin King, 18, Adam Licciardi, 18, and Caleb Womack, 17.

UMass Amherst Hearing Scientist Receives $1.3 Million to Study Hearing and Aging

AMHERST, Mass. – Hearing scientist Karen Helfer at the University of Massachusetts Amherst has received a five year, $1.3 million grant from the NIH’s National Institute for Deafness and Other Communication Disorders to conduct a series of studies to determine what is going on in difficult listening situations where hearing aids often don’t help, and explore ways to assist millions of older Americans to do better.
 
Though most people with hearing loss are treated with hearing aids, the devices are not very helpful in situations where many people are talking at once or there is background

Former National Organization for Women Head Starts Five College Policy Residency Oct. 22

AMHERST, Mass. – Long-time women’s rights advocate Kim Gandy begins a two-week stay as the Five College Public Policy Initiative’s fall 2012 Social Justice Practitioner-in-Residence on Monday, Oct. 22 through Nov. 2. During her stay, Gandy will present several public events throughout the Five College community.

Gandy’s residency this fall marks the second of the Social Justice Practitioner-in-Residence Program. This collaborative Five College project is housed administratively at the Center for Public Policy and Administration (CPPA) at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
