HOLYOKE, Mass. – A group of eighth-grade girls from the greater Holyoke area will get a hands-on introduction to science-related learning this summer through a new program announced today by leaders of Girls Inc. of Holyoke and the College of Natural Sciences at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

Shelly Peyton, UMass Amherst Chemical Engineer, Named 2013 Pew Scholar in Biomedical Science

AMHERST, Mass. – Shelly Peyton, an assistant professor of chemical engineering at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, is one of 22 researchers who have been named Pew Scholars in the Biomedical Sciences by The Pew Charitable Trusts.The scholarships provide flexible funding to early career scientists researching the basis of perplexing health problems—including diabetes, autism, Parkinson’s disease, and cancer.
 
Pew’s scholars program awards recipients $240,000 over four years to pursue their projects without direction or restriction.

Eight UMass Amherst Scholars Awarded Fulbrights for Study Abroad

AMHERST, Mass. – Eight scholars from the University of Massachusetts Amherst have been selected to participate in the prestigious Fulbright U.S. Student Program.
 
The competitive program selects current university students and recent graduates for their academic success and leadership potential and supports a year of study abroad. Noted Writers to Give Readings During Juniper Summer Writing Institute at UMass Amherst

AMHERST, Mass. – The Juniper Summer Writing Institute at the University of Massachusetts Amherst will host seven nights of poetry and fiction readings by acclaimed faculty and writers in residence from June 23-29.

UMass Amherst Sunwheel and Sky-Watching Events Mark the Summer Solstice on June 20-21

AMHERST, Mass. – The public is invited to witness sunrise and sunset associated with the summer solstice among the standing stones of the UMass Amherst Sunwheel on Thursday, June 20 at 7:30 p.m. for sunset and on Friday, June 21 at 5 a.m. for sunrise. These events will mark the astronomical change of season when days are longest and nights are shortest in the Northern Hemisphere. Rain cancels the events.  
 
At these hour-long gatherings, UMass Amherst astronomers Judith Young and Stephen Schneider will discuss the astronomical cause of the sun’s solstice or standstill.

UMass Amherst Offers ‘Permaculture Your Campus’ Conference

AMHERST, Mass. – As part of campus-wide sustainability efforts, the University of Massachusetts Amherst is hosting its second annual “Permaculture Your Campus” conference on June 23–26.
