WMUA, the campus’ student-run radio station, won three awards from Massachusetts-Region Island region of the Associated Press on April 8.
Journalism graduates Kathleen McCann, Kristen Millen and Emily Moses won for best continuing coverage for their series on the Graduate Employee Organization’s protests in the spring of 2005.
WMUA news operations director Melissa Blanksteen, a Journalism major, won for best feature story for her piece on a sand mandala made on campus last November.
WMUA general manager Marc Bertrand and sports production director Nick Zguro won for their coverage of a UMass women''s basketball game vs. Siena in November. Both are Communication majors.
The three awards tied WMUA with Emerson College for the most categories, followed by Boston University, which won two. The awards bring the total won by the station’s news department to 10 since 1998. The sports department has now won nine since 1999.
Currently, 28 students make up the WMUA news team, which broadcasts three daily updates Monday through Friday. The news staff also airs the “UMass 1800,” a weekly news talk show on Sundays at 5:30 p.m.
The sports department broadcasts UMass football, women''s basketball and men’s lacrosse games throughout the year.
