WMUA fund drive raised $41,000

WMUA-FM last month completed its most successful on-air fundraising event in its history, generating more than $40,000 in contributions.

WMUA’s 25th annual fund drive, which took place Nov. 13-19, raised $41,201 from 949 listeners. This represents a 40 percent increase in the number of pledges and a 56 percent increase in dollars pledged over last year.

“A good amount of the increase was due to the addition of ''Democracy Now!'' to our program schedule,” said WMUA Fund Drive director Jill Weinstein.

''Democracy Now!,'' which airs on WMUA weekdays from 8-9 a.m., provides access to people and perspectives rarely heard in the U.S. corporate-sponsored media. The program generated calls from 208 listeners, who contributed $11,023.

“We kicked off our fundraising with the 25th annual Polkathon,” said Weinstein. The 14-hour polka marathon brought in 385 pledges totaling $15,910. UMass employee Billy Belina, host of “Polka Bandstand” and organizer of the Polkathon, was recently inducted into the Polka Hall of Fame in Chicago.

“We were thrilled with the response of our dedicated listeners,” said Weinstein.
