AMHERST, Mass – The University Without Walls program at the University of Massachusetts Amherst will host a reception on Thursday, Oct. 25 at 5:30 p.m. at the UMass Center in downtown Springfield to announce the establishment of a scholarship in honor of Ruth B. Loving, a UWW alumna and leader of the civil rights movement in Springfield.

When fully endowed, the Ruth B. Loving Springfield Area Scholarship will provide a source of financial aid to UWW students living in Hampden County who are experiencing significant financial need.

Known as the “Mother of Civil Rights in Springfield,” Loving dedicated her life to community involvement, civil rights, and political activism. She was a member of the Springfield National Guard and Women’s Defense League, served as president of the local NAACP, founded and worked as editor for an African-American newspaper, hosted a radio show called “Focus on Springfield,” worked on countless commissions and boards, and received many awards. In 1987, at the age of 73, she earned her bachelor’s degree from UMass Amherst through the UWW program. Ruth Loving died in 2014 at the age of 100.

“Dr. Loving embodied the mission and philosophy of UWW,” said Ingrid Bracey, UWW director. “As we work to provide more opportunity to students in the greater Springfield area, we thought it a fitting tribute to honor her legacy.”

Speakers and attendees will include UMass Amherst officials, members of the Loving Family, former State Rep. and UWW alumnus Raymond Jordan, State Rep. Angelo Puppolo and Springfield Mayor Domenic J. Sarno. The evening will also include hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar.

The event is open to the public. RSVP by October 17.
