Donna Johnson, president of the University Staff Association at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, has been elected chair of the Massachusetts Teachers Association’s Higher Education Leadership Council.
The council, known as HELC, comprises the presidents of all MTA-affiliated higher education locals and members of the MTA’s Board of Directors. Johnson is a business manager in the university’s English Department.
In framing the issues that affect public higher education, the council is an important voice within the 110,000-member MTA.
Johnson’s two-year term as chair begins Sept. 1. She has been president of the University Staff Association for 12 years and has been a member of HELC for 16 years. Johnson was previously chair of HELC, from 2010 to 2012.
