Food Scientist Sets Criteria for Online Nutrition Sites
AMHERST, Mass. - Fergus Clydesdale, head of the department of food science at the University of Massachusetts, is a member of a panel of leading U.S. and Canadian nutrition experts that has developed rating and evaluation criteria for reviewing online nutrition sites.
Clydesdale sits on the advisory board for the Tufts University Nutrition Navigator, the first online rating and review guide designed to help users of the World Wide Web find nutrition information that is the most reliable and best suited to their needs. The six-member panel includes recognized specialists with expertise in research, policy, nutrition education, and communications.
Websites are reviewed by nutritionists from Tufts, who apply rating criteria developed by the advisory board. Sites are rated according to such factors as accuracy, depth of information, when the information was last updated, and usability.
The Nutrition Navigator is a project of the Tufts University School of Nutrition Science and Policy, and is underwritten by a grant from Kraft Foods Inc.
Everywoman''s Center Offers Support Groups
AMHERST, Mass. - The Counselor Advocate Program at the Everywoman’s Center of the University of Massachusetts will offer two 10-week support groups: one meeting Thursdays from 7:30-9:30 p.m. beginning Feb. 26 for adult survivors of child sexual abuse; the second, Wednesdays from 7:30-9:30 p.m. beginning March 4 for adult survivors of rape. Both groups will meet at UMass.
The group for adult survivors of child sexual abuse will be facilitated by Cat Chapin. Lis Brook will facilitate the rape survivors support group. The group sessions will focus on common issues facing survivors including isolation, blame, grief, trust, anger, and intimacy.
The groups are free, confidential, and open to community and Five College women. All women interested in either group must have an initial interview before the group begins. Professor''s Fisheries Science Text Cited
AMHERST, Mass. - A new textbook on fisheries science by Michael Ross, an associate professor in the department of forestry and wildlife management at the University of Massachusetts, has received a favorable review in the journal "Ecology."
"Fisheries conservation and management" (Prentice Hall, 1997) is an introductory fisheries conservation and management text that "breaks from the traditional fisheries approach and prepares fisheries students for problems facing us in the 21st Century," according to its reviewer, Jimmy D. Winter, of the department of range, wildlife, and fisheries management at Texas Tech University.
The book, says Winter, "concentrates on maintaining or restoring fish stocks and managing people: i.e., allocation of resources, conflicts among user groups, and effects of human activities on aquatic ecosystems," and has "many excellent features. ** I highly recommend it ** "
Ross is also the author of "Recreational Fisheries of Coastal New England" (UMass Press, 1991).
