AMHERST, Mass. – Four University of Massachusetts Amherst sport management alumni will receive the 2014 Harold J. VanderZwaag Distinguished Alumnus Award. The awards are being given to John Martin, Pam Batalis, David Wright and Howard Nuchow.
Launched in 1993, this award annually recognizes alumni for their professional excellence and outstanding achievement in the sports industry as well as their dedication to the Mark H. McCormack Sport Management Department at the Isenberg School of Management at UMass Amherst.
Lisa Masteralexis, department head, will present an award to Martin, Batalis and Wright during the Sport Management Awards Banquet at the Mullins Center on Monday, March 31. Nuchow will receive his award at a later date.
Martin is the managing director for NASCAR Digital and oversees the day-to-day operations for all of NASCAR’s digital platforms. Prior to joining NASCAR, Martin spent seven years at Turner Broadcasting where he spearheaded new business development for the Turner Sports Digital division and managed the marketing team promoting all Turner Sports telecasts. He earned his master’s degree in sport management at UMass Amherst in 1991.
Batalis is currently the general manager for Learfield Sports, formerly Nelligan Sports Marketing, at UMass Amherst. Prior to her current position in collegiate sports marketing, Batalis spent several years in Fortune 500 brand strategy consulting firms in New York City. SportsBusiness Journal has named her as one of the “Top 50 Women’s Sports Executives.” She received her master’s degree in sport management in 1992.
Wright is senior vice president of global sponsorship for Major League Soccer and Soccer United Marketing and oversees new business efforts for some of the premier soccer properties in the United States including Major League Soccer, U.S. Soccer Federation, Mexican National Team, and Chivas de Guadalajara. Before joining MLS/SUM, Wright was the assistant coach for the UMass men’s soccer team. Wright is a 2012 SportsBusiness Journal Forty Under 40 award recipient. He received his master’s degree in sport management in 2000.
Nuchow is the co-head of CAA Sports, a market leader in the areas of athlete representation, property sales and sponsorship, corporate consulting and media advisory services. Nuchow oversees the agency’s sports practice and has negotiated deals on behalf of clients such as Peyton Manning, Dwyane Wade, Kevin Durant, Derek Jeter, Robinson Cano, Sidney Crosby, Cristiano Ronaldo and Shaun White. Nuchow was named to Street & Smith’s SportsBusiness Journal 50 most influential people in sports business in 2009-13. He earned a bachelor’s degree in sport management in 1992.
