UMass Amherst Counseling Center’s Training Program Reaccredited

AMHERST, Mass. - The psychology internship program at University Health Services’ Center for Counseling and Psychological Health (CCPH) has earned reaccreditation from the American Psychological Association (APA) through the year 2018. The seven-year accreditation is the maximum term granted by the association.

The APA’s Commission on Accreditation is recognized as "the national accrediting authority for professional education and training in psychology," according to its website. Accredited organizations are measured against rigorous standards which ensure high quality training for program participants. The CCPH’s psychology internship has maintained APA accreditation since 1979.

The CCPH offers three internships each year for advanced doctoral students enrolled in APA-approved clinical, counseling or professional psychology programs. Interns are active members of the department, working under the supervision of a senior clinician to provide services including crisis intervention and short-term therapy for individuals, groups, couples and families.

Organizations seeking APA accreditation undergo extensive self-assessment and an on-site peer review by senior practitioners and academics in the field. Accreditation is determined by the level of compliance with APA standards; an organization’s performance is reviewed regularly throughout its term.
