AMHERST, Mass. – Undergraduate Commencement at the University of Massachusetts Amherst will feature a keynote address by Kenneth I. Chenault, chairman and CEO of American Express Company, to the 5,500 graduates and their families and friends. The event is on Friday, May 10 at 5 p.m. in McGuirk Alumni Stadium and will be held rain or shine.
Chenault will also receive an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree at the ceremony. Chenault joined American Express in 1981 and became president and chief operating officer in 1997. He assumed his current responsibilities as CEO in 2001, and later that year became chairman.
Chenault serves on the board of corporate and nonprofit organizations including IBM, Procter & Gamble, the Arthur Ashe Institute for Urban Health, the National Center for Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University, the Smithsonian Institution’s Advisory Council for the National Museum of African American History and Culture, the World Trade Center Memorial Foundation and the Bloomberg Family Foundation. He is also a member of the Business Council and serves on the Executive Committee of the Business Roundtable.
Separate Senior Recognition Ceremonies for each school and college will be held on Saturday, May 11 at sites across the Amherst campus.
The Graduate Commencement Ceremony will take place on Friday, May 10 at 9 a.m. in the Mullins Center, where 1,200 candidates will receive master’s and doctoral degrees. A reception is planned for the graduate degree recipients, their guests and faculty immediately following the ceremony at approximately 11 a.m. under the tent on the west side of the Mullins Center.
The Stockbridge Commencement Ceremony will take place on Saturday, May 11 at 10 a.m. at Bowker Auditorium in Stockbridge Hall. Approximately 100 candidates will receive associate of science degrees.
At the undergraduate ceremony, parking is free and shuttle buses will take guests to the stadium from campus lots. Guests should plan to arrive on campus by 3 p.m. Stadium seating is unreserved.
