AMHERST, Mass. – Students returning to the campus of the University of Massachusetts Amherst begin moving into residence halls on Sunday, Aug. 31 and classes begin Sept. 2. The students will be greeted with a full week’s schedule of activities from Aug. 31 to Sept. 6.
Chancellor Robert C. Holub will help students move into Pierpont and Moore residence halls in the Southwest Residential Area on Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to noon.
First Week 2008 includes a performance at the UMass Amherst Comedy Night featuring Charlie Murphy and Bill Burr on Saturday, Sept. 6 in the Fine Arts Center with shows at 7 and 10 p.m. On Saturday, Aug. 30, the first football game of the season, a night game against Albany, will kick off at 6 p.m. at McGuirk Alumni Stadium.
On Labor Day, Sept. 1, the Welcome UMass Amherst Green Barbecue is from 4-7 p.m. on the lawn near the W.E.B. Du Bois Library (Rain date is Tuesday, Sept. 2). Chancellor Holub will be on hand to welcome the class of 2012. This year, the event goes “green” with recyclable plates, local produce and more.
Minuteman Mall Mania is an after-hours opportunity for students to visit Hampshire Mall on Tuesday, Sept. 2, from 9 p.m. to midnight. Other activities include free afternoon skating at the Mullins Center practice rink on Sept. 6 from 1-3 p.m.; an Activities Expo on the library promenade from 4-7 p.m. on Sept 3; and performances of Saltimbanco Cirque du Soleil, a high-intensity, acrobatic spectacle, on Sept. 3, 4 and 5 at 7:30 p.m. in the Mullins Center. Additional shows are on Sept. 6 at 3:30 and 7 p.m. and Sept. 7 at 1 and 5 p.m. in the Mullins Center.
