UMass Amherst Announces First Week Activities As Students Return to Campus

AMHERST, Mass. – Students returning to the campus of the University of Massachusetts begin moving into residence halls on Sunday, Sept. 2 and classes begin on Tuesday, Sept. 4. The students will be greeted with a full week’s schedule of activities.

First Week 2007 includes a performance by comedian Lewis Black on Saturday, Sept. 8 at the Curry Hick Cage as well as Minuteman Mall Mania, an after-hours opportunity for students to visit Hampshire Mall on Tuesday, Sept. 4 from 9:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. There is a Labor Day barbeque for students Monday, Sept. 3 on the lawn near the W.E.B. Du Bois Library from 4-7 p.m.

Other activities include free afternoon skating at the Mullins Center practice rink on Sept. 3 and Sept. 7 from 1-3 p.m.; an Activities Expo on the library promenade from 4-7 p.m. Sept 5; and Tiempo Libre, a Cuban dance party at the Campus Center Auditorium Sept. 6, beginning with free salsa dance lessons at 7 p.m. and live music at 8 p.m. There will also be a memorial service Sept. 11 featuring ringing of the bells in the Old Chapel.

SUNDAY, SEPT. 2
• First-year students move in, residence halls open at 10 a.m.

• 9-11 p.m. Nite Fest celebrations in residential areas.

MONDAY, SEPT. 3
• Returning students move in, residence halls open at 10 a.m.

• Free lunch and dinner in dining commons all day for families.

• 4-7 p.m., Welcome to UMass barbeque on the library lawn.

TUESDAY, SEPT. 4
• First day of classes.

• 9:30 p.m. – 12:30 a.m. Minuteman Mall Mania, Hampshire Mall open for late-night shopping.

WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 5
• 1-4 p.m. Student Union open house and resource fair.

• 4-7 p.m. Activities Expo on the library promenade.

THURSDAY, SEPT. 6
• Noon -4 p.m. Ice Cream Scoop on the library lawn.

• 7 p.m. dance lessons; 8 p.m. live music begins. Tiempo Libre, Cuban dance party.

• 9 p.m. – midnight, Late Night Brunch, all dining commons.

FRIDAY, SEPT. 7
• Noon-4 p.m. Wild About Wilder, learn about the Bilingual Collegiate Program, Women of Color Leadership Network and the Everywoman’s Center.

• 8 p.m., “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” Something Every Friday Movies, Student Union ballroom; 10 p.m., “Spiderman 3.”

SATURDAY, SEPT. 8
• 2-4 p.m. Intramural Field Day, intramural fields across from Boyden Gymnasium.

• 1-6 p.m. Cosmogirl Soundstage Concert, with live bands on the Southwest horseshoe.

• 8 p.m. Comedian Lewis Black at Curry Hicks Cage.

MONDAY, SEPT. 10
• 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Community Service Fair, Student Union ballroom.
