AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts Amherst Alumni Association has announced a new UMass Amherst special license plate that will allow students, alumni, parents and friends of the state’s flagship campus to "ride with UMass pride" everywhere they go. The plate design features the university’s Minuteman logo, a UM number designation, and the Alumni Association tag line, "You were. You are. UMASS."
"We have a unique opportunity, with the upcoming change in leadership, growth of UMass basketball and football and continued acclaim of research and academic programs, to encourage alumni and friends across the Commonwealth to show their pride and make UMass the first Massachusetts university with a plate on the road," said JC Schnabl, assistant vice chancellor of alumni relations and executive director of the Alumni Association.
The cost for the UMass plate is a $40 special license plate fee and swap fee of $20. The Alumni Association will receive $28 of the initial order and $40 of each subsequent renewal to support student scholarships and programs that advance UMass Amherst.
As an added bonus, student and employee plate holders will receive a 10 percent discount on campus parking permits, while all other plate holders can request up to three free parking passes per year at the Campus Center Garage. The special plate fee is also tax-deductible; $28 with the first order and $40 with each renewal.
At this time, the Alumni Association is collecting application requests at www.UMassAlumni.com/licenseplate. When the minimum number of requests needed to produce the plate is reached, the RMV application will be sent out and must be returned with $40 to complete the order. The $20 swap fee is due at the RMV when the new plate is picked up. Plate numbers will be randomly assigned, but if there is enough interest, an online auction may be held in the future for plate numbers 1-99.
The University of Massachusetts Amherst Alumni Association represents more than 225,000 alumni around the globe, and provides programs and services that enhance the student experience and add value to a UMass Amherst degree.
