UMass Amherst’s McCormack Department of Sport Management Announces Recipients of 2016 Alumni on the Rise Awards

AMHERST, Mass.– The Mark H. McCormack Department of Sport Management at University of Massachusetts Amherst’s Isenberg School of Management has named Allison Cole, Brett Danahy, John Schlieman and Joe Smith as recipients of its 2016 Alumni on the Rise Award.

Department chair Janet Fink will present the awards during the annual McCormack Sport Management Awards Banquet at the Mullins Center on Tuesday, April 12. Launched in 2012, the award recognizes McCormack alumni who have graduated within the past five to 10 years and have become leaders within their respective sport industries.

Allison Cole currently serves as deputy director of athletics for external affairs at Yale University, where she oversees Yale athletics’ fundraising and development, sports publicity, ticketing, promotions, licensing and corporate partnerships. In addition, she serves as the senior women’s administrator and sport supervisor for volleyball, women’s lacrosse, heavyweight crew, lightweight crew, women’s crew and women’s basketball. During her time overseeing the athletic annual fund, revenue grew from $1.8 million per year to $3.1 million per year. In her four years as director of development, she assumed responsibility for all endowment and capital project fundraising. In fiscal year 2015, athletics had its strongest fundraising year in history, adding $16 million in cash to the athletics endowment and generating $3.8 million in annual funds. In her four years at the helm of the athletics endowment, pledges to perpetual varsity athletic funds have totaled over $40 million. She has also directed the successful fundraising for Reese Stadium, the renovation of the Brooks-Dwyer Varsity Weight Room, and is now in the planning stages for a women’s athletics field house, a golf team training facility and an indoor/bubbled turf facility.

Brett Danahy currently serves as the vice president of national sales for SJX Partners, a CSM company. Since 2007, he has managed all aspects of the sponsorship, event and integrated media sales process across a wide range of sport and entertainment properties including Cirque du Soleil, Dew Tour, Premier Boxing Champions, The Competitor Group, the PGA of America and U.S. Open Tennis.

John Schlieman is vice president of corporate partnerships for the Washington Redskins of the National Football League. In this role, he is responsible for both the business development and client management of team sponsorships and integrated media partnerships. Schlieman began his career on the agency side of the industry, spending time at both Brodeur Worldwide and Woolf Associates. He also worked on the brand side at Bank of Hawaii, where he served as vice president of brand, advertising and promotions.

Joseph Smith is a senior vice president of global sponsorship marketing at Bank of America. Smith manages the company’s sponsorship relationships with Major League Baseball (MLB), eight MLB teams, the Bank of America Chicago Marathon and the Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle 8K. In addition, Smith leads all property negotiations and marketing campaigns leveraging these sponsorships. Prior to this role, he was a program manager with the Bank of America enterprise marketing team, where he led national marketing initiatives demonstrating the company’s commitment to the military.
