State Senate candidates to debate on campus

A debate between the two candidates for the Hampshire-Franklin Senate seat, incumbent Sen. Stan Rosenberg, Democrat of Amherst, and Republican challenger James D. Miller of Pelham will be held Tuesday, Oct. 5 at 7 p.m. in 104 Thompson Hall.

A political newcomer, Miller is associate professor of economics at Smith College. Rosenberg has served in the Senate since 1991 and is currently president pro tempore. Prior to his election to the Senate, he served four years in the state House of Representatives.

Communication professor Ralph Whitehead will moderate the debate. Panelists will be Bob Paquette of WFCR News, Holly Angelo of the Republican, and Mary Carey of the Daily Hampshire Gazette.

The public debate is being sponsored by the UMass Amherst Labor Coalition, which includes the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, Local 1776; Massachusetts Society of Professors/Massachusetts Teachers Association; Service Employees International Union, Local 888; and the University Staff Association/ Massachusetts Teachers Association.
