James V. Staros, provost and senior vice chancellor for academic affairs since 2009, announced Oct. 2 that he will leave his post at the end of the academic year.
In an e-mail to the campus community, Staros said he had planned to serve longer, but “changes in my personal circumstances” led to the decision to step down.
Staros said his announcement is intended to clear the way for Chancellor Kumble Subbaswamy to conduct a national search in time to have a new provost in place for the beginning of the 2014-15 academic year.
Prior to his appointment. Staros served seven years as the dean of the College of Arts & Sciences at Stony Brook University in New York.
In his message, Staros says he plans to take on a faculty role as a professor in the department of biochemistry and molecular biology.
