Eileen Otis of the department of sociology at Stony Brook University will speak on "Market-Embodied Labor: The Gender Politics of Labor in China''s Globalized Service Workplaces" on Thursday, March 3 at 4 p.m. in 620 Thompson.
An occupational revolution is occurring in China due to a growing consumer
economy. While scarcely in evidence 20 years ago, the service sector now
supplies most of China''s new urban jobs. Otis'' comparative, ethnographic study of two international luxury hotels in China reveals how the corporate production of consumer masculinities shapes distinct labor regimes that lay the groundwork for contrasting gender dispositions among workers.
The talk is part of the Inequality and Public Policy Speaker Series presented by the Center for Public Policy and Administration.
The event is free and open to the public.
