Jeffrey Soto was sworn in Dec. 19 as the UMass Police Department’s newest officer.

Chief John Horvath administered the oath to Soto during ceremonies that were attended by Soto’s fiancee, Sonia Pena, their 3-year-old son Jaston, Soto’s brother’s Jason and about 25 members of the department.

“During his background review, Jeff impressed us with his professionalism, dedication and desire to be a UMass police officer,” said Horvath.

Soto graduated from the Western Massachusetts Regional Police Academy in June. He served as a full-time police officer in Shutesbury since April 2012. Prior to that, he was a part-time officer in Whately and a special police officer in West Springfield.

Originally from Peabody, he is a graduate of the High School of Commerce in Springfield.
