Massachusetts Senate President Stanley C. Rosenberg will visit University Health Services to read aloud and distribute free books to children as part of a Reach Out and Read event.

Rosenberg will be joined by Dr. George Corey, UHS executive director, and Dr. Ilana Schmitt, a UHS pediatrician.

Reach Out and Read, a national non-profit organization, works to provide children an educational foundation for success. The organization implements a three-step model by training doctors and nurses to emphasize the importance of reading aloud, providing young children with a new book every regular checkup, and creating literacy friendly waiting rooms at ROR program sites.

UHS promotes early literacy and school readiness by incorporating books into pediatric care, donating books to patients and encouraging families to read aloud together.
