AMHERST, Mass. – College basketball website College Court Report announced Nov. 10 that Sam the Minuteman, the official mascot for the University of Massachusetts Amherst, is the winner of its second annual Mascot Mayhem Challenge, presented by RabbleTV.
In online voting that began Aug. 17, Sam defeated a series of opponents in the bracket-style tournament of 64 teams, including IPFW’s Don in the Round of 64, Wisconsin’s famous Bucky the Badger in the Round of 32, Rocky of the University of South Florida in the Sweet 16, the Saint Louis Billiken in the Elite Eight and Canisius’ Petey the Griffin in the Final Four.
In the Championship Match, Sam faced HH3 from Maryland-Eastern Shore, the heir to retired 2014-15 Mascot Mayhem Challenge champion Harry the Hawk. According to College Court Report, more than 13,000 votes were cast for the final matchup via an online poll and social media, “the highest total number of votes in the contest’s brief history.”
In response to the news that he had won the contest, Sam took to Twitter to thank his supporters.
“Woohoo! Thanks to #UMassNation for all of the support,” he tweeted, including emojis for a grinning face with smiling eyes, a thumbs-up, a party popper, two hands raised in celebration and the double-underlined number 100. He concluded his tweet with his customary “#GoUMass.”
Sam, along with the other mascots from the Final Four, will receive No. 1 seeds in next year’s Mascot Mayhem Challenge.
