ROTC Units at UMass Amherst Will Hold 24-Hour Veterans Day Vigil

AMHERST, Mass. - Cadets from the Army and Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps at the University of Massachusetts will hold a 24-hour vigil outside Memorial Hall in honor of Veterans Day beginning Tues. Nov. 9 at 4 p.m., with closing ceremonies Wed. Nov. 10 at 4 p.m.

The vigil, a long-standing annual event, will begin with a short ceremony where cadets will post the colors and lay a memorial wreath honoring members of the University community who have died in battle. Teams of four cadets, with two representing the Army and two from the Air Force, will take up posts nearby and stand vigil.

At the closing ceremony, the colors will be retired, followed by an Air Force guest speaker. Along the Campus Pond, members of the 1st Battalion, 101st Field Artillery Unit of the Massachusetts Army National Guard from New Bedford will fire a volley. The playing of taps by two buglers from the UMass Minuteman Marching Band and a fly-over by two aircraft from the Massachusetts Air National Guard will conclude the event.
